I just wanted to write a really short post to share this tip with you. A lot of people seem to stumble on this site while they are looking to do some tests. Now, as always you will most likely not have full on storage array sitting around that is just waiting to be a guinea pig while serving your production environment.
A partial solution is to test things in a simulator. For people who want to test things on their Cisco switches there is an open source “Internetwork Operating System” or IOS simulator that gives you a taste of the real thing. Admittedly it’s not the same as having a full environment, but it might just help you in testing a scenario or routine that you have in mind.
Now, you will find that there is also a simulator for the CLARiiON environment that is called the “Navisphere simulator” and a CX simulator. Problem is that the simulator can’t be downloaded with any old Powerlink account. Partners and employees can use a simple download in Powerlink ( Home => Products => Software E-O => Navisphere Management Suite => Demos) , but if you don’t fall under that category you will have a hard time actually finding a download.
Normally to get the simulator you would need to order some CLARiiON training. The Navisphere and CX simulators are actually packaged with the Foundations course and you can also find them in one of their video instructor led trainings. The problem is that you or your boss will pay quite a bit for said trainings, and this is not great if you just want to perform a quick test.
Now for my tip… Buy the “Information and Storage Management” book (ISBN-13: 978-0-470-29421-5 / ISBN-10: 0-470-29421-3) from your favorite book supplier. Beside it being a good read it also allows you to register on a special site created for the book where you can actually find some learning aids that also include the Navisphere simulator and the CX simulator. You can find the book starting around $40 and there’s also a version available for the Kindle if you are in to e-books. You don’t need any special information to register the book on the EMC site so it’s quite a quick way to get the simulators and check if you can actually simulate the scenario you have in mind.
Hey Bas,
Can you provide some other link for it or upload it to some other site if you have a working copy of it. The file downloaded through the given link is tgz file of 8KBs and that too corrupted.
I think there is something wrong with the file. please provide the link for a good copy of it.
Thanks in advance
Hi Nagendra,
I’m not sure which link you followed, but I have no direkt link towards any of the sims. The Navisphere and CLARiiON CX sims can be downloaded by following the ISM book link, and after registering there you will find two zip files, but no tgz files.
In regards to the IOS simulator, just click on “view all files” and select the 0.2 version if the 0.3 version is not working for you.
Hope that helps. π
Bas
Hi Bas,
Still I am confused how to download the simulator. Can u plz upload somewhere or guide me with the process.
Regards
Suneet
Hi Suneet,
if you can tell me which simulator you are looking for, I can probably try to help you. π
Cheers,
Bas
Hi Bas,
Can u plz upload navisphere simulator and provide me the download link. I am not a registred user for EMC powerlink and I can not download from there.
Suneet
Suneet, I think I spelled it out quite clearly:
“You donβt need any special information to register the book on the EMC site so itβs quite a quick way to get the simulators and check if you can actually simulate the scenario you have in mind.”
So, to make it even more clear, go to http://education.emc.com/ismbook/default.aspx and click on one of the links to the learning aids on that page (for example “Section 1 Learning Aids Β»”), fill out the information there and you will be taken to a new page where you can download the NaviSphere simulator from the official EMC site. π
Hope that helps, if not then let me know.
Bas
Hi Bas,
Thank you very much for guiding me, how to download the simulator. I have downloaded the simulator and installed it successfully but when I am opening the application, it’s prompting me to Activate. After entering the details, it says Failed to connect and giving me a option to Register Later. Do u have any suggestion, how can I bypass it.. Thanks in advance….
Regards.. Suneet
Nice one yaar… Thanks for your info… keep it up…
ISM learning aids cannot be downloaded after the survey. have they moved the learning aids to somwhere else?
Hi Kumar,
I pinged the folks at EMC, and they are working on the issue. Should hopefully be available again soon. Thanks for the info!
Cheers,
Bas
And as a final update, the links to the ISM learning aids are working again. π
Cheers,
Bas
Hi Bas,
I have download Navisphere Simulator from the above link. While trying to install it , it is throwing me an error ” This Application was unexpectedly Quit ” . Invocation of Java application has caused an Java Target Execption”.Could you please help me on this.
Hi Vinod,
I don’t know the java requirements for the application, but I would suggest trying to update your Oracle Sun java version, or otherwise trying to download the IBM Java JRE and see if that helps.
Cheers, Bas
Try running it with Windows XP SP2 Compatibility mode
@PerrazooI cerluntry don’t have the time to help you that much. You have to check the code that the widget generates you add the “id” that is uses for its div (usually div) to the appropriate section in style.css (look for “sidebar” and background). Regarding the old date format, that was one of the things that I disliked the most and it took me a while to have it my way. Only solution I have is: use the source. Compare my Freshy mod with the original one.
Hi Bas,
Thank you very much for guiding how to download the simulator. could you please guide how to activate as i tried to activate & failed to do so. Each time i used to get error “Could not connect to server due to Network issues. Either click ‘Try again’ or ‘Register Later’ to go to login page” I just bypassed clicking register later and started using the simulator.
Will it get expired if i won’t register?
run as per above showed in win xp sp2 compatibility mode and after installation run simulator either in apple safari directly or install latest java JRE latest version to run in IE 8 or firefox.
Hi Bas,
Appreaciate your effort. I wonder whether you will be able to help me. I am looking for EMC ISM VLIT. Any idea where I can download it from. Any info will be helpful.
Thanks, Riaz
Hi Riaz,
thanks for leaving a comment. One option that might be of help, is going to http://education.emc.com/guest/campaign/starterkit.aspx They have an offer right now on the ISM VILT, which saves you 500 USD and includes the ISM book and a voucher for the exam. You can find a FAQ on that starter kit here. π
Hope that helps,
Bas
Hi Bas, Thank you very much for your quick response. Are you aware of anyone who is willing to share the video’s for a cost. I am just trying to save some bucks. Thanks, Riaz
Hi Riaz,
best advice I can give you there, is to first check if this is allowed on the ECN (EMC Community Network) right here, and you might find someone who may be willing to share the VILT with you, or is perhaps willing to sell you their copy once they passed the exam.
Hope that helps,
Bas

If you want a notebook with more processing power, mainstream notebook
could be an option, because this notebook CPU is a member of
a class of highest Intel Core2Duo. Benchmarks show
the results of performance in that area you are interested in.
Also i – Pad with SB would still keep the competition miles away.
gud work keep it up
